2nd interview with Janet Abbott

Hello Stewards of Water!

We have exciting news — Beneath the Surface has officially entered production!

We kicked off the month with a jaunt over to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, one of the most storied hot springs towns in the American Southwest. Originally named Hot Springs, the energy of the place was palpable from the moment we arrived. The mineral-rich waters, the desert light, and the deep sense of history made it the perfect place to begin capturing the heart of this film.

We had the honor of sitting down for in-depth interviews with two remarkable members of the Balneology Association of North America (BANA):

  • Chris Devlin

  • Janet Abbott

What can we say, the conversations bore a mix of treachery, disbelief, sheer comedy amidst unlikely circumstances all in the pursuit of deep healing that culminates in hot springs. We uncovered the kind of history that reminds us that history is written by those in power. We dropped from the head to the heart with conversations that speak of connection to something far greater.

Of course we wrapped our first full day interview with some b-roll captures and team soaks, courtesy of Riverbend Hot Springs. We’ll share more behind-the-scenes clips soon!

We also had the pleasure of filming at historic hot springs that worked tirelessly to steward the medicine of the waters to people in times of great need - one in particular name - The Charles Motel and Hot Springs. Their efforts were recognized and awarded with the first national accessibility award, “The Kathy Clark Award.”

Other hot spring features on the trip include Hoosier Hot Springs, where the original owner brought his wife to help her heal ailments. It wouldn’t be a complete trip without a shoutout to Glamp Camp, who hosted us during our stay as a way to support the film.

Sunrise soaks to start a full film day.

This is just the beginning of production, but the journey already feels alive. The waters are speaking, and we’re listening.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Your support as Stewards makes this possible. We’ll continue sharing behind-the-scenes updates, early clips, and reflections as we move forward.

With gratitude and excitement,

Gaby & Michael
